It is easy to get to Krakow – for centuries it has lain at the intersection of important trade routes, at the meeting point of cultures and political influences. It is considered to be the most important tourist destination in Poland.

The network of rail, road and air connections makes Krakow one of the most accessible cities in this part of Europe. Its facilities – from the A4 motorway, through the attractive connections provided by numerous airlines, to a special railway line, taking travellers from the airport to the city centre and a well-developed public transport network – open up many opportunities for tourists coming from the nearest and furthest corners of the world.

Despite the size of the agglomeration, moving around Krakow is not a problem. The city is famous for its well-organized communication network and its constantly expanding and modernised infrastructure.


Transportation: by plane


There are two airports near Krakow: in Balice (Krakow Airport) and in Pyrzowice (Katowice Airport).

Krakow Balice Airport (John Paul II International Airport Krakow – Balice) is located about 15 kilometres west from the city centre. It offers over 110 connections to 28 countries.

From the airport to the city centre you can reach:

By train – on the Krakow Airport – Krakow Główny – Wieliczka Rynek Mine. Tickets PLN 8 (Krakow Airport – Krakow Główny), PLN 11 (Krakow Airport – Krakow Główny – Wieliczka Rynek Kopalnia); available from the machine in the passenger terminal (eastern part, level 0), or the machine at the railway station, on the train (in the machine or at the services). There is no charge for luggage. The journey to Krakow Airport – Krakow Główny route takes about 20 minutes.


By bus – bus routes number 292 and 208 and night bus number 902 stop at several points in the city centre, and depart from the Dworzec Główny Wschód terminus. The final stop is in front of the airport passenger terminal. Agglomeration tickets are accepted, slightly more expensive than those used in the city centre a normal ticket costs PLN 4, and a concessionary ticket PLN 2. There is no charge for luggage. The journey takes about 45 minutes.


By taxi – Krakow Airport boasts its own taxi network, which has fixed travel prices. The journey to the centre of Krakow costs, depending on the distance, 69 or 89 PLN, regardless of the time of day or day of the week. The journey takes approx. 20-40 min.

Transfer – a single journey by a car or bus suitable for the number of people to any location in Poland (including the centre of Krakow at the price of PLN 68), and even abroad can be ordered at the InfoKrakow information point located at the airport. The exact price for the journey is given at the time of ordering the service. Fees are independent of the time of day or day of the week.

By car – one of several routes are available to the city centre:

  • through Olszanica, Chełm and Wola Justowska Street. Olszanicka and Królowej Jadwigi, and then via Błonia al. Focha through Szczyglice and Bronowice along Balicka and Bronowicka
  • the motorway A4 to the node in Bielany, and then via Księcia Józefa in the direction of Salwator
  • The A4 motorway to the Krakow-Północ junction, then route no. 7 through Modlniczka and the roundabout of Ofiar Katynia

There is a paid multi-story car park in front of the passenger terminal, which also houses the car rental offices.

Pyrzowice (Katowice Airport)

Many people coming to Krakow use the airport in Pyrzowice (Katowice International Airport in Pyrzowice), because the planes of the popular low-cost airlines WizzAir and Germanwings land here. The airport is located approx. 110 km west of Krakow.

From the airport in Pyrzowice it is possible to travel to Krakow:

By bus – it is possible to get to the centre of Katowice by bus (timetables available on the airport’s website), and then from Katowice to Krakow. Private companies also offer a direct transfer service from Pyrzowice to Krakow, but their services must be ordered in advance – via the Internet or by phone. Regular carriers on this route:

By car – a car can be rented at one of the offices located at the airport in terminal buildings A, B and C. The fastest access to Krakow is via route S1 to Mysłowice, and then via a toll section of the A4 motorway. You can also come off the S1 road in Dąbrowa Górnicza and take the toll-free national road 94 through Olkusz, with a chance to admire the scenic landscapes of the Eagles’ Nests Trail and the valleys near Krakow.

Transportation: by train


The Main Railway Station in Krakow (Krakow Główny) is located in the city centre only approx. 10 min. walk from the Main Market Square. Ticket offices are open from 5.00 am to 23.00 pm, ticket machines are available 24/7 at the station. For travellers, an automatic luggage room with lockers of various sizes available.

Discounts for railway tickets are available to Polish students up to the age of 26, who present a student ID issued by a Polish university, and for Poles studying abroad with an ISIC card.

Transportation: by bus


The bus station in Krakow is directly connected with the Main Railway Station. Buses run on many regional, national and international routes.

Ticket sales are carried out at the ticket offices in the station (Monday-Sunday 7.00-19.45), directly from drivers and on the websites of some carriers.
