El programa artístico preparado para el 15º Congreso Mundial de la Organización de las Ciudades Patrimonio (OCPM) es una oportunidad para familiarizarse con la enorme riqueza de Cracovia y, más ampliamente, con la escena artística de Europa Central. Se inicia el Congreso en la misma fecha de la Fiesta de la Ciudad, que se celebra cada año el 5 de junio, y los Días de Cracovia, que como todos los años en junio, son una oportunidad para cultivar importantes tradiciones urbanas, como: el Pan Sagrado, la entronización del rey del gallo, la procesión de Lajkonik y Wianki. Por lo tanto, elegir la fecha del Congreso no ha sido fruto de la casualidad …
Las reuniones de los representantes de las ciudades de la OCPM estarán acompañadas por conciertos, exposiciones, ferias tradicionales y eventos organizados en lugares simbólicos: en la Galería de Arte Polaco del siglo XIX, en la Mina de Sal de „Wieliczka”, en los jardines de Cracovia y al pie del Castillo Real, a orillas del Vístula. Aquí es donde, el 1 de junio, después de la puesta del sol, tiene lugar un espectáculo anual al aire libre, en referencia a la historia antigua sobre la creación de la ciudad y la leyenda de uno de los símbolos importantes de Cracovia – el Dragón de Wawel. El espectáculo mostrará a los participantes del Congreso una celebración local importante para los habitantes de Cracovia. El espectáculo con títeres animados del dragón volador estará acompañado por efectos pirotécnicos, multimedia y musicales. A este espectáculo seguirá el Desfile del Dragon, que transcurrirá por las calles de la ciudad el 2 de junio. Será un colorido desfile de niños con títeres de dragones, que se han ido creando a lo largo del año en las escuelas, gremios y centros culturales. Los dragones desfilan en compañía de artistas, bailarines, orquestas ruidosas, zancudos y malabaristas. Durante unas horas, todos se convertirán en actores de un gran espectáculo al aire libre, que finalizará en un escenario en la Plaza del Mercado Principal.
La ceremonia de apertura del Congreso hará referencia a las relaciones y tradiciones musicales multiculturales de Europa Central y Oriental. El programa, titulado Hacia las fuentes, en uno de los mercados medievales más bellos de Europa, está abierto también a los residentes de Cracovia. Un concierto dividido en dos partes, con la participación de prominentes artistas que representan las hermosas tradiciones del folklore y el mundo de la música polaca y centroeuropea, presentado con arreglos tradicionales y contemporáneos, con la participación de artistas de toda Europa y de la orquesta Sinfonietta Cracovia. El final de la noche será una fiesta de baile con la participación de las más populares bandas de la escena etno polaca, que atraerán al público: a los cracovianos y turistas en un torbellino de diversión sin límites.
En noches sucesivas, las ricas tradiciones musicales de Cracovia aguardan a los participantes del Congreso y el encuentro con la Representiva Banda de Música de la Mina de Sal „Wieliczka”, que desde el año 1830 ha estado amenizando continuadamente los eventos más importantes de la famosa mina de sal. La velada en el Centro de Congresos ice de Cracovia será enriquecida con el espectáculo que está en la frontera entre la música y las artes teatrales. Como despedida, en el espacio mágico de los jardines arqueológicos, se encontrarán tradiciones de jazz improvisado, música callejera espontánea y arreglos inusuales de estándares internacionales. En este espacio de patrimonio vivo, a la sombra de la colina de Wawel, en una atmósfera de alegre diversión, Cracovia se despide de los invitados al Congreso.

LAJKONIK WITH A RETINUE / MLASKOTY BAND
Lajkonik – a true symbol of Krakow, always followed by his colorful retinue along with the grotesque Mlaskoty band accompanying him. The figure of Lajkonik depicts a Tartar rider in a pointed cap topped with a crescent. His annual frolics remind the inhabitants of the legend: brave rafters defeated the Tartar army resting before the planned invasion of Krakow, they celebrated the victory by playing tricks on the inhabitants. They dressed up as invaders, and the leader of the rafters entered the city on a horse belonging to the leader of the Tartars. Since then, Lajkonik’s retinue joyfully marches to the Main Market Square every year on the octave of Corpus Christi.
“KRAKOWIACY” SONG AND DANCE ENSEMBLE
The “KRAKOWIACY” Song and Dance Ensemble has been operating continuously since 1951. Its program includes folklore from many parts of Poland in a scenic setting, with a particular emphasis on the Krakow region. “KRAKOWIACY” repeatedly represented Krakow and Poland at international folklore events in Europe, Africa and South America. The City of Krakow holds patronage over the ensemble.
“KRAKOWIACY” will add splendor to their impressive, intergenerational band, testifying to the vivid tradition of Krakow’s dances.
“CRACOVIA DANZA” COURT BALLET
Cracovia Danza is the name of a professional team specializing in recreating traditional court dances and ballets that have been known over the centuries – from the Middle Ages to the present day.
As an urban cultural institution, the ensemble initiates, organizes and supports various events aimed at popularizing the heritage and culture of dance. The ballet activity makes it possible to popularize knowledge about art and court culture, as well as to exchange experiences between Polish and foreign artists interested in historical dances. The ballet ensemble also cooperates with domestic and international scientific and cultural institutions through cultivating and consistently promoting the old art of dance.
In the parade, Cracovia Danza will perform as the magnificent Court of Queen Bona.
KUR’S FRATERNITY (SHOOTING SOCIETY)
Krakow Marksmen’s Guild has existed since the 14th century. Initially, it functioned as a paramilitary guild organization, but at present it is primarily engaged in social activities. Every year, it organizes a shooting competition in which a “shooting king” is appointed.
The history of shooting societies began in medieval Western Europe. They taught the townspeople the use of weapons in case of any need to defend the city walls. The development of societies in Polish lands proceeded with the spreading of the Magdeburg law in this area.
A group of reconstructors from Krakow, they recreate the military and everyday reality of the 17th century. They make old crafts and develop historical fencing skills. Parva Armis regularly participates in historical reconstructions of the battles of the era, playing the role of Polish dragoons, but also the regiment of the Swedish or Turkish mercenaries, Akindji. In the Krakow parade, they will perform wearing City Militia uniforms, as modeled by the images known from the Stockholm Roll – a 16-meter long roll of paintings depicting the triumphant entry of Polish King Sigismund III Vasa to Krakow on the occasion of his marriage to Constance, Archduchess of Austria.
A Krakow group operating at the intersection of theater and performance. For many years Locomotora has enlivened city squares and streets. The group regularly cooperates with befriended theaters and juggling groups. The unrestrained desire to play of stilters, conjurers, mimes and jugglers who make up the group will surely delight the viewers.
The Hungarian Szelindek old music band was founded in 2010 with the aim of playing and displaying historical music from Europe and Asia. It puts a particular emphasis on the promotion and reconstruction of traditional folk music of the regions: the Carpathians, Hungary, Poland, the Balkans and Turkey. They perform original sounds using such authentic musical instruments as: bagpipes, hurdy-gurdy, rauschpfeife, lute, zurna, ney, violin, bagpipes, cobras, drums, tambourine, bouzouki, darbuka, and davul. Szelindek often performs in Poland, they have played, among others, during the Krakow Midsummer Fair.
A trans-folk band, founded in Krakow. They play old dance and ritual music from Poland and other countries. The music combines the acoustic sounds of instruments with the trance nature of modern electronic music. This time – during the parade – it will show its more traditional face.
TOWARDS THE SOURCES / part I
The family band from Męcina Mała in the Low Beskids is made up of Jan Malisz and his children; Zuzanna and Kacper. The band is inspired by the traditional rural music of the region but also dances and songs from different areas of Poland. This music is played in a traditional manner, that is, on the violin, basses and drum in an archaic way, with a certain amount of freedom, joy and improvisation. It is not just a school recreation of old melodies. The band also creates their own songs of rural nature, in a dialogue with the present day, touching various styles. The Band’s second album, “Wiejski Dżez”, won the Folk Phonogram 2017 and Wirtualne Gęśle 2017 awards. In 2017, the Malisz Band, as one of the three bands, played with an orchestra at the opening concert of Womex 2017 in Katowice. The band performed in Malaysia at the Rainforest Music Festival, in Great Britain at the WOMAD Festival on the BBC3 radio stage, in Germany, at the Rudolstadt Festival, on the WDR 3 Radio in Cologne, in Bonn (during a concert organized by the Polish Institute in Dusseldorf) in Offenburg, in Estonia at the Viljandi Folk Music Festival and in Belgium at the Gooikkoorts Festival. The Band also played in the Presidential Palace on the occasion of the Extraordinary Concert dedicated to Oskar Kolberg, at the EthnoPort Festival 2015, EtnoKraków 2015, Rozstaje 2015, 2017, Globaltica, Sounds of the North Festival and Cross-Culture Festival 2014. In 2013 and 2014, the band’s music was also presented at the International Fair Womex art.

The band was established in 2010, and its repertoire consists of contemporary interpretations of melodies from different regions of Ukraine and Poland, rich traditions of the Eastern Borderlands, songs from Biłgoraj, melodies of Masuria and Podlasie, performed bilingually. The sound of the group – alongside sound instrumentalists – is the perfect harmony of the vocalist and violinist Karolina Beimcik (the founder of the band) and the Ukrainian vocalist and pianist, Dana Vynnytska. Slavic melodies in combination with elements of jazz and unusual harmony crystallize in the acoustic sound of guitar and double bass.
The band is the laureate of the Polish Radio “Nowa Tradycja” festival; they have successfully performed in Poland and many European countries.

A legend of the Hungarian music scene, the band was awarded the WOMEX award (2008), among others. The group is composed of: Mihály Sipos, László Porteleki, Péter Éri and Dániel Hamar – musicians who approach country music and singing with respect and attention, while at the same time they are not afraid of bold and unobvious interpretations. The quartet reaches for music from various regions, although it is particularly close to the work of the Hungarian-speaking inhabitants of the eastern part of Transylvania, especially the Szeklers living in the Transylvanian Plain. Muzsikás extracts universal beauty from the local folklore. He refers to the Carpathian musical idiom from the time when the highlander cultural community was more important than the division of its local manifestations into separate national cultures. This means that in their music, apart from the explicit Transylvanian note, we can easily hear echoes of Podhale highlanders or kolomeykas from Czeremosz. Apart from the classic set of violins, violas and double bass, musicians present less known instruments on the stage, for example Carpathian bagpipes or a three-stringed contra (or gardon) – a very old bass-like instrument from which the sound comes out by striking the strings with a special stick, instead of rubbing it with a bow.

A charismatic singer, one of the most original speakers of the Polish ethno scene, a singer with a great stage personality. Fans of ethno and world music know her for her repertoire inspired by Polish and Slavic traditional music. She has performed at prestigious stages and festivals in most European countries (including WOMAD UK), in the US (NY Broadway Symphony Space, Chicago Cultural Center), in South America (WOMAD Chile), in Asia (Georgia, India, Korea South). She is a laureate of many renowned festivals, including GRAND PRIX and the Audience Award at the Polish Radio Nowa Tradycja festival, the Stage Songs Review in Wrocław, Superjedynki TVP1 as part of the Polish Song Festival in Opole, ZPAV and Polish Radio prestigious phonographic awards. Her subsequent solo albums: “Live in Alchemia” and “Możesz być” were at the forefront of the Polish Radio competition for the Folk Phonogram of the Year, and the original “Możesz być” album was awarded the prestigious title. In 2013, she was honored by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage with the Gloria Artis – Zasłużony Kulturze medal.

The Orchestra of the Royal Capital City of Krakow. The beginnings of Sinfonietta Cracovia’s history are closely connected with the creation of the Krakow Young Chamber Musicians ensemble. High skills, commitment of musicians and freshness of interpretation, with the friendly support of Elżbieta and Krzysztof Penderecki, resulted in the band being provided with the status of a city orchestra and a new name in 1994 – the Orchestra of the Capital Royal City of Krakow Sinfonietta Cracovia, still used today. Sinfonietta collaborated with a group of the most outstanding artists from around the world, including: Krzysztof Penderecki, Antoni Wit, Jerzy Maksymiuk, Lorin Maazel, Valery Gergiev, Rudolf Buchbinder, Gidon Kremer, Maxim Wiengierow, Rafael Payare, Gábor Boldoczki, and Dmitry Sitkovetsky, Ilya Gringolts, Mischa Maisky, Julian Rachlin, Xavier de Maistre, Tabea Zimmermann, Grigory Zyslin, Richard Galliano and others.
For 20 years the orchestra has been shaped by Robert Kabara, an outstanding violinist, violist and teacher. In 2001-2009, John Axelrod was the first guest conductor. In 2014, the next chapter in the band’s history began to be written by Jurek Dybał – a respected conductor, musician of the Vienna Philharmonic and animator of cultural life. Thanks to the efforts of the new director, the orchestra engaged in many innovative ventures promoting new music. In recent years, the orchestra has intensified its concert activities, significantly increasing the number of performances abroad. The band performed, among others in: China, the Netherlands, Finland, Germany, Czech Republic and Austria.
In recent years, Sinfonietta Cracovia has performed the Polish premiere of Concerto per tromba e orchestra by Krzysztof Penderecki in a series of world premieres with the participation of Gábor Boldoczki and recorded the Oriental Trumpet Concertos (Sony Classical) album in cooperation with a Hungarian trumpet player, directed by Jurek Dybał. In 2017, the album was awarded the International Classical Music Award (in the category of Contemporary Music), and then it was awarded the Echo Klassik – the prize of the German music industry. Conducted by Krzysztof Penderecki and Jurek Dybał, the band also recorded the Fryderyk Chopin. Piano Concertos (DUX 2016) album in collaboration with the pianist, Szymon Nehring, which received the Pizzicato Supersonic Award and the Joker award for the “Crescendo” magazine.
In 2017, the position of the Honorary Guest Conductor of Sinfonietta Cracovia was taken by Venezuelan maestro, Rafael Payare, who enjoys international recognition.
He studied choral and symphonic conducting at the Belarusian Academy of Music and the Conservatory in Rotterdam. He took part in master classes conducted, among others by Colin Metters, Jorma Panula and Marin Alsop. He was an assistant to many esteemed conductors – Stanisław Skrowaczewski, Christoph Eschenbach, Lorin Maazel, Krzysztof Penderecki, and Martyn Brabbins.
He is the winner of choir conducting competitions in Riga and Wrocław. He received awards from the President of Belarus, scholarships by Gaude Polonia and Huygens, the title of “Man of the Year” (Belarus, 2017). He has performed during festivals in: Lucerne, Pärnu, Castleton, Cabrillo, Mogilev, Orkney. He has toured, among others, with the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, POR, NOSPR, Orchestras of the Belarus and Krakow Philharmonic. He cooperated, among others, with: Agata Zubel, Szymon Nehring, Branford Marsalis and Chick Corea. He was responsible for a number of productions at the Wrocław and Baltic Opera, the Lyon Opera, and the Opera and Ballet Theater in Ekaterinburg.
Since 2013, he has been the first conductor and artistic director of the Capella Sonorus band. In 2014-2016 he was the assistant conductor at NOSPR. Since 2018 he has began his cooperation with the Russian National Orchestra, whose first conductor and artistic director is Vladimir Spivakov.
A violinist, arranger, composer, music producer, multi-instrumentalist. Winner of the Grand Prix of the 39th International Youth Jazz Competition and Festival with an original project by Stanisław Słowiński Quintet, the Audience Award at the 1st Zbigniew Seifert International Jazz Violin Competition; a laureate of the 2014 Creative Scholarship of the City of Krakow, repeatedly nominated in the “Violin” and “New Hope” categories in the Jazz Top of Jazz Forum readers’ survey. He has dozens of works of all kinds in his output that he arranged and composed; from electronic works, to solo violin ones, through string quartets, jazz music, to orchestral works. As the leader of independent projects and session musician, he records, among others, for Hevhetia, For Tune, Kayax.
The leader of original projects (Stanisław Słowiński Quintet et al.), Sideman, a session musician – visited hundreds of clubs and festivals around the world (including: South Korea, Chile, China, India, Capo Verde, Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Norway, Serbia, Iceland, England, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Georgia, Austria, Hungary). He participated in the implementation of projects with internationally renowned artists (including: Brian Eno, Ben Frost, Daniel Bjarnason, Elliot Goldenthal, Diego Navarro, Ludwig Wicki, Joe Hisaishi, Robert Kabara, Joanna Słowińska, Paweł Kaczmarczyk, Piotr Orzechowski, and Grzech Piotrowski , Hadrien Feraud, Marcin Wasilewski). With his original material, he made his debut with the Landscapes Too Easy To Explain album which was released internationally at the prestigious Hevhetia publishing house. During his premiere tour Słowiński and his band performed on the stages of clubs and jazz festivals of: Spain, Serbia, Romania, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Hungary and China. Another original Visions | Between Love and Death album recorded with the Stanisław Słowiński Sextet group was appreciated by critics and the public, and its premiere concert tour included dozens of concerts in many countries of Europe and Asia.
In 2010-2012, he was a student at the Music Academy in Krakow in the class of violin taught by Professor Associate Robert Kabara, PhD. After two years of study at the classical music department, he devoted himself entirely to improvised music. He emphasizes versatile musical development; participated in numerous master classes and open lessons, educating himself as a violinist in the field of classical music and jazz – under the supervision of: Marek Feldman, Adam Bałdych, Michał Urbaniak, Peter Buck, Łukasz Syrnicki, Wiesław Kwaśny and Grigory Zhyslin, Kaja Danczowska, Ari Poutiainen. He also perfected his composition workshop as a participant in the first edition of FMF Master Classes for Young Composers at Alvernia Studio, where lectures were presented, among others, by: Trevor Morris, Diego Navarro, Robert Elhai, Michael Todd, Robert Messinger.

KAPELA ZE WSI WARSZAWA (WARSAW VILLAGE BAND)
One of the most recognizable bands of the ethno stage, the winner of many awards, including six Fryderyk awards, the Grand Prix of the European Radio Union, BBC Radio award, winner of the title of “Folk Phonogram of the Year” of the Polish Radio and the Award of the German Phonographic Critique. International success came with the release of their second album, Spring of the People, in 2002. Since then, the band has been playing at the most important festivals, and its new achievements are expected by supporters in many countries around the world. The group successfully combines traditional playing and singing techniques with inventiveness, achieving the avant-garde sound of traditional music fully understood by the contemporary recipient. Although the Band’s instrumentarium includes traditional instruments – violins, cymbals, barabans, hoop drum – they sound very modern, and the musicians are not afraid of juxtaposing them even with DJs. Kapela ze Wsi Warszawa, established in 1997, is one of the most important ethno music bands and one of the most outstanding representatives of Polish folk. The group’s instruments are traditional (violins, cymbals, baraban, hoop drum), but the sound is completely modern. Each release includes new artistic experiments and fusions related to the music of the region of Mazovia.

One of the most prominent bands of the Polish ethno scene. It is co-created by outstanding personalities of the Polish ethno scene, including Joanna Słowińska – a charismatic singer and violinist, Jacek Hałas – a singer and lyre, Stanisław Słowiński – a violin virtuoso, composer, co-creator of the improvised music stage. The group was founded in 1997 immediately becoming a sensation on the Polish music scene. The band was appreciated by critics and the audience in Poland and in the world. Its members played with equal success at weddings, dances, in rural clubs, as well as in prestigious concert halls in: Poland, Europe, Asia, North and South America. Recently, they have performed, among others, at the most important ethno and world music festivals, including: WOMAD UK, WOMAD Chile, WOMEX Budapest, Jeonju Sori Int’l Festival (Korea), Ulsan World Music Festival (Korea), EtnoKraków / Rozstaje, Nowa Tradycja (Warsaw), Ethnoport (Poznan), Jielark Jagielloński (Lublin), Brave Festival (Wrocław), Cross-Culture (Warsaw), Budapest Ritmo, Budapest Folk Fest (Budapest). Winners of many prestigious awards, including the Grand Prix of the Polish Radio Nowa Tradycja competition, the Grand Prix at the Euro Folk festival and the title of the Folk Phonogram of the Year for the Muzykanci debut album – one of the most important albums in the history of Polish folk. The Muzykanci band also has numerous recordings for Polish Radio, Polish Television and other European broadcasters. The group has traditional songs from almost all areas of Poland in the repertoire. They are also inspired by: Lemko, Hungarian, Balkan, Gypsy and Jewish music. The Muzykanci band belongs to the precursors of the sound based on acoustic instruments and referring directly to the folk pattern. This, plus their huge stage expression, performance dynamism, excellent vocal parts sung with many voices, determine the originality and attractiveness of the group’s proposals. Today, the Muzykanci band is one of the greatest concert attractions on the folk stage; journey in time and space: in the footsteps of rural musicians, gypsy caravans and klezmer orchestras … Each of their concerts heralds an artistic event.

Great liveliness, spontaneity and musicality, brilliant references to the traditions of different cultures – and stage credibility, give Dikanda, functioning on the folk scene for two decades, a great fan base. A group that grows after each concert. Although the band can certainly be included among the classics of Polish folk music, their concerts attract even more attention abroad than they do at home. Dikanda focuses on the authenticity of the style – they look for new trends and most of the songs are original compositions. Musical inspirations are drawn from the traditional folk sounds of the broadly understood orient – from the Balkans, through Israel, Kurdistan, Belarus to India. In their works, one can hear mostly the Balkan and Gypsy sounds. The band has existed since 1997. It released its debut album, entitled “Music of the four sides of the East” in 2000. The artists have many successful albums in their portfolio (including “Usztijo” awarded by “Folker” with the “Album of the Year”), but their concerts are their real life, above all. They have played hundreds of them: in Poland, Germany, Austria and Switzerland, Russia, India, in the US, and each of them is an extraordinary emotional journey through ethnic sounds, a lively meeting full of energy, charisma and real feelings.

Cracovia Danza Court Ballet – founded by Romana Agnel, a dancer and choreographer, is the only professional dance group in Poland specializing in Baroque and historical Polish dance. The group’s repertoire is inspired by, among others, treaties of dance masters and old iconography dating back to the Middle Ages, until the 20th century. The ballet group takes part in many prestigious events, performed in the country and abroad, including: Morocco, France, Russia, Germany, China, Japan, Bulgaria, the United States, India and Korea. It has been the Cultural Institution of the City of Krakow since 2006.
The Alla Polacca performance is about old Polish tradition, about Polish culture, its origins and all factors from and what still shaping our identity. There are such Polish national dances in the performance as the Polonaise or Masurek, as well as the bergamoska, polka, wesoły (the merry) and uroczy (the charming).

Representative Brass Orchestra of the Wieliczka Salt Mine
The representative Brass Orchestra of the “Wieliczka” Salt Mine, one of the oldest brass bands in Europe, began its official artistic life in 1830, at the time being called the title of Imperial – Royal Saline Music.
The high artistic level of the saline musicians meant that numerous orders for concerts of the orchestra in Krakow, Podgórze and Eastern Galicia already came in the Austrian times. For nearly 190 years of existence, the orchestra has performed in front of crowned heads and other celebrities who also gladly visit the historic underground mine today. The Miners’ Orchestra also played during important moments in Poland, including the bringing of the ashes of Adam Mickiewicz to Poland in 1890, the 500th anniversary of the Jagiellonian University in 1900, as well as during the unveiling of the Grunwald Monument in 1910 and the ceremony of laying the foundation stone for the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow in 1923.
It still performs during official state, religious and mining holidays and provides the best musical setting for important events organized in the underground mine. The contemporary orchestra performs a variety of music: from classical to marching music and popular music. The versatility of musicians allows them to reach not only for songs written for wind instruments, but also to successfully perform: Verdi, Bach, Schubert, Strauss and film music.
The musicians of the Wieliczka mine also perform during festivals and contests organized in the country and abroad, including: Buchloe, Augsburg, Fussen, More, Salzburg, Hallein, Halstadt, Innsbruck and Brussels.
The EXPRIMO string quartet is created by a group of friends. They are graduates of the Music Academy in Krakow. Music is their passion and inspiration for which they are capable of great sacrifices. The quartet performances are full of emotions, temperament, commitment and sensitivity. Exprimo’s musical mission is to introduce listeners to the magical world of sounds in which everyday life is forgotten.
They perform concerts in a climate of tango and the most beautiful masterpieces of classical, film and popular music.
June 5 – Archaeological Museum in Krakow
The Krakow Street Band was created in 2014 and initially all of their musical performances were held on Krakow’s Market Square. Spontaneous performances in the street contributed to the release of the first album. The band performs music from the borderline of folk, rock, blues, country and traditional jazz.
DJ: Łukasz Biega and Łukasz Wojtusik will play international hits known and popular throughout the years, inviting participants to a dance party.
